Aging Well: Nutrition and Body Confidence with Registered Dietitian Julia Liber, In-Person

Objectives: Liber will discuss nutrition priorities for senior women's aging well, focusing on essential nutrients for muscle health and osteoporosis prevention, while providing positive messaging around body image.

Julia Liber, Registered Dietitian, runs her own private practice. Her focus is on helping clients with their nutrition to achieve critical health outcomes, such as diabetes management and cholesterol reduction, all while moving away from rigid meal plans and calorie counting. Drawing on her clinical expertise and a deep personal passion shaped by her own lived experience, Julia advocates for a non-diet approach, guiding individuals to stop pursuing diets and quick fixes, and instead develop long-term sustainable habits.

Ariana Nasr is a singer and multi-instrumentalist who specializes in popular classics from around the world, sung in a variety of styles and languages. Originally from Nova Scotia, she has spent the last 8 years living and performing in Montréal. In her solo show she accompanies herself with a chromatic button accordion and will be singing some of her favourite songs such as La Vie en Rose, Tumbalalaika, Habanera from Carmen, Bei Mir Bist Du Schein, Crazy, Mambo Italiano, Besame Mucho and O Sole Mio.

Wednesday Aug. 13,25 Day trip to Upper Canada Village & Norm Foster play Maggie’s getting Married. 7:15 AM Bus leaves 7:30 AM

The visit to the village is self guided. This is a walking tour so please wear walking shoes. There are 2 rides included, one in a horse drawn carriage and one in a boat pulled by a horse. You can have lunch at various places on site. (You pay your own lunch).

Upper Canada Village endeavors to depict life in a rural English Canadian setting during the year 1866. ^[1] Featured at the site are over 40 historical buildings, including several working mills (woolen mill, grist-mill and sawmill) and trades buildings (blacksmith, tinsmith, cabinetmaker, cooper, bakery, cheese-maker). Farming is demonstrated through the growing, harvesting or processing of heritage vegetables and livestock. Aspects of late 19th-century domestic arts, social life, music, religion, and politics are also discussed, interpreted and demonstrated by staff dressed in clothing of the period. Local gardens in the village feature the flora and fauna commonly grown in the summer.

Touring Upper Canada Village is a magical experience, transporting you back in time to the 1860s. A key part of the experience are the authentic buildings that make up the village, the activities that each housed, and of course, the people who lived there.

Founded in 1961, Upper Canada Village is one of the largest living-history sites in Canada. Here, we endeavor to depict life in a rural English Canadian setting during the year 1866. Featured are over forty historical buildings, many moved here prior to flooding of the “Lost Villages” during the St. Lawrence Seaway development project. These include homes, functioning mills and trades workshops.

1860’S CULTURE

Traditional farming techniques are demonstrated through the growing of heritage vegetables and raising of heritage livestock breeds. Ornamental gardens throughout the village feature flora fashionable in the late Victorian era. Weavers, spinners and dressmakers demonstrate traditional handiwork. Aspects of late 19th-century social life, music, religion and politics are discussed and demonstrated by knowledgeable staff dressed in clothing of the period. Also offered are educational camp programs allowing children to experience everyday life in 1860s Canada.

Upper Canada Village is situated next to the War of 1812 Battle of Chrysler Farm site, Visitor Centre, and Memorial.

The Village Store

At the entrance to Upper Canada Village is one of Eastern Ontario's largest gift shops open to the general public. Here you can buy a wide variety of quality Canadian crafts and reproduction items (tinware, yarn, blankets, etc) made by Village artisans. You can choose from a selection of dinnerware, toys and clothes that will make great souvenirs. The Village Store also carries a superb selection of books, from heritage themes to craft techniques. The Village Store's pantry offers a multitude of teas, spices, jams and marinades. Best of all, you can purchase some Village Bread baked fresh daily, and Cheddar Cheese made at the Village Cheese Factory.

Welcome to the Duncan family kitchen the night before Maggie’s big day and a small group of friends and relatives are gathered in the next room to await the groom’s arrival. Everything’s going to plan. The rings are safely hidden away. They’re ready for anything e xcept for the Big Surprise that turns the kitchen into a 3-ring circus!

Wednesday Aug. 13,25 Day trip to Upper Canada Village & Norm Foster play Maggie’s getting Married. 7:15 AM Bus leaves 7:30 AM

Upper Canada Village endeavours to depict life in a rural English Canadian setting during the year 1866. ^[1] Featured at the site are over 40 historical buildings, including several working mills (woolen mill, grist-mill and sawmill) and trades buildings (blacksmith, tinsmith, cabinetmaker, cooper, bakery, cheese-maker). Farming is demonstrated through the growing, harvesting or processing of heritage vegetables and livestock. Aspects of late 19th-century domestic arts, social life, music, religion, and politics are also discussed, interpreted and demonstrated by staff dressed in clothing of the period. Local gardens in the village feature the flora and fauna commonly grown in the summer.

This landmark exhibition is the first devoted to the fascinating career of gallerist Berthe Weill (1865-1951), an important, but nearly forgotten figure of modern art history. Weill was the first woman to focus primarily on championing young painters just as they were beginning their careers. In her gallery, she exhibited some of the greatest artists we have come to know today: Pablo Picasso, Raoul Dufy, Marc Chagall, Amedeo Modigliani, Diego Rivera, Henri Matisse and Suzanne Valadon, among many others.

Among the nearly 100 works presented in the exhibition, some have become milestones in the history of art, while others will enable you to discover the work of still unsung figures, including women artists.

Featuring exceptional loans from major museums in Europe and North America, the exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, jewellery pieces, and archival documents that testify to the quality of Weill’s gallery and deepen our understanding of its historical context.

Art Drop-In Program Starting May 6, 2025

Shushana Caplan will be running an art drop in program whereby you bring your art materials to the Art Room of the Aquatic Center on the second floor, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. each Tuesday afternoon, beginning May 6.

Shushana is there to supervise, not to serve as an art teacher.

Dr. Shulman will talk about how a doctor goes about making a diagnosIs as well as other information. He will take questions after his talk.

Dr. Mitch Shulman (or "Dr Mitch" as he’s known to those who follow him on radio, TV and in print) has always loved teaching. He’s an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at McGill, and an attending physician in the emergency departments of the 2 campuses of the McGill University Health System, teaching medical students and residents. He has presented at McGill’s Thursday Evening Lecture series and its Lunchtime Webinars; at the McGill Refresher Course for Family Physicians and at many other professional meetings. He's a Quebec Heart and Stroke Foundation Advanced Cardiac Life Support Master Instructor. He's also actively engaged in educating the public. He appears daily on Bell Media Radio (CJAD800AM); appears on Global TV’s Montreal This Morning and is an award-winning columnist with a weekly column in the largest English language weekly in Quebec, The Suburban.

Wednesday May 14, 2025 - Day Trip to Ottawa for the Canadian Tulip Festival.

We leave the ACC at 7:15 AM sharp (you have to be at the ACC at 6:45 AM sharp to board the bus).

We return at Approximately 6:00 PM. We will travel by Luxury Bus. Arrival at Ottawa at 9:30 AM.

If you have a confirmed reservation, please be at the Aquatic Center for 8:45 AM. We should be returning around 5:30 PM.

We will start with a 45 minute guided tour of The Canadian Museum of History. After you will have free time to see the museum on your own.

At 12:00 we leave for lunch at the famous ByWard Market. You will have 1-1/2 hours to eat and browse. You pay for your own lunch ( you can also bring your own lunch).

The ByWard Market is a vibrant and historic district located in the heart of Ottawa, Canada’s capital city. With its bustling atmosphere, rich history, and diverse mix of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options, the ByWard Market has become a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike.

At 2:00 – 3:00 We will do a self-guided tour of the Tulip Beds at Confederation Park.

As the city prepares to host visitors from around the world for The Tulip Festival you will get a chance to view the incredible Commissioners Park. Follow the winding pathways and take in the explosion of colour in gardens filled with over 250,000 tulips . This festival began as a gift from Holland’s royal family, who were exiled in Ottawa during World War II. The tulip was designated Ottawa’s official flower in 2001. A truly festive atmosphere encompasses the whole city.

At 3:30 we will have a guided tour at the Royal Mounted Canadian Police Stables, home of the world-famous RCMP Musical Ride. Meet the horses and riders, walk through the stables, experience our visitor center, and browse through the Mountie Shop. The Musical Ride supports front-line police operations by building positive relationships, supporting recruiting efforts and promoting the RCMP's image in communities in Canada and around the world.

The RCMP and the Musical Ride were all men at its foundation. The first woman was incorporated to the Ride in 1981. During its annual tour of Canada and abroad, usually from May to October, the Musical Ride visits 40 to 50 locations.

2. Wednesday May 21, 2025 Annual Day Trip to Hudson Village with Brunch and a Play

We leave the ACC at 9:30 AM sharp (You have to be at the ACC at 9:00 AM sharp to board the bus ). We return at approximately 6:00 PM. We will travel by Luxury Bus.

The play is called Halfway There by Norm Foster

Look at the globe and you will see degrees of latitude. The small town of Stewiacke, Nova Scotia lies exactly halfway between the North Pole and the Equator. It’s a quirky little place, full of colourful characters and lots of hilarious hometown gossip. Every week, four friends meet in the town’s diner to share their hopes and their dreams. Then one day, a handsome new doctor arrives in town.

No one expects anything will change. But people can change, if only by degrees.

At 10:00 AM We will have brunch at Allo Mon CoCo in DDO. You can pick any choice from the menu, and they have offered us a 15% Senior discount. (You pay for your own meal.)

Wednesday, December 4, 2024 Festive Holiday Luncheon with Great Entertainment. 1:00 pm (Doors open at 12:15)

A holiday musical representing an eclectic program of composers from around the world.

Luis Grinhauz on violin has performed widely as soloist and playing chamber music in Canada, the Americas, Israel, Switzerland, Germany and guest concert master in Spain.

He is a founding member of Musica Camerata. He has recorded several CDs and is often heard through the CBC and Radio-Canada.

Berta Rosenohl on piano has appeared several times as soloist with the McGill Chamber Orchestra, the pro Arte orchestra in Montreal and with the Sherbrooke University orchestra. She is often heard coast to coast through the CBC and has made several recordings.

Berta helped in the creation of Musica Camerata Montreal , a chamber music group celebrating their 55 ^th season.

The festive lunch will be scoops of Egg Salad, Tuna, Fake Crab, Garden Green salad & Potato salad. Dinner rolls, fruit cocktail and donut holes for dessert. Also non alcoholic wines and tea & coffee.

We will travel by Luxury Bus. Arrive at Brockville at 10:30 AM. Then we board our 1000 Island & Seaway Cruise Ship. This will take 1 ½ hours during which we will eat our lunches on board. (You bring your own lunch.)
We will also visit Canada’s oldest Railway Tunnel which was built in 1850 and runs 1 quarter of a mile under the city. It was restored in 2017 and visitors can now walk through the tunnel.
Afterward we will tour the Fulford Place Mansion - An Edwardian mansion containing much of the original furnishings and art collected from around the world.
After that we will have tea at Cosies Tea House, (Scones, jam, cream and tea). Then we depart for Montreal at 4:00 PM.

Mark will speak about the origins of AI and the benefits to many multinational companies and in the medical field as well as pop culture. The negatives were fraud, scams, and false info as well as child pornography. Legislation is now in the process of giving fines and jail time to those who use AI for unethical purposes when arrested. Unfortunately, many jobs will be lost because of AI. Please prepare your questions.

Wednesday, JUNE 5, 2024: Speaker Karen Derouaux from AGI, on Memory Loss, (Alzheimer Group Inc.): 1:30pm

In this presentation, we will differentiate the signs of normal aging versus cognitive impairment, outline the general diagnostic process and important terms used by healthcare professionals. We will conclude with how to communicate kindly and effectively with a person experiencing cognitive impairment, techniques that when in common practice, will manifest a dementia-friendly community.

Wednesday, July 17, 2024: Day Trip to Quebec City, Montmorency Falls, & Dinner Buffett:

We leave the ACC at 8:00 A.M. sharp (You must be at the ACC at 7:30 A.M. sharp to board the Bus) We return at 9:00 P.M.

We will travel by Luxury Bus and arrive at Quebec City at 11:00 A.M.

We will be met by our local guide, and tour Old Quebec for 1 hour then depart for Montmorency Falls where we will ride a cable car to the top and have our picnic lunch, (you bring your own lunch). After we return to the Old City and continue our tour. At 4:45 we drive to Buffet des Continents for a buffet dinner. At 6:00 we depart for Montreal for a 9:00 arrival.

Costs include all admissions, the buffet dinner and bus.

Mark will speak about the origins of AI and the benefits to many multi-national companies and in the medical field as well as pop culture. The negatives were fraud, scams, and false info as well as child pornography. Legislation is now in the process of giving fines and jail time to those who use AI for unethical purposes when arrested. Unfortunately many jobs will be lost because of AI.

Wednesday August 14, 2024:

Day Trip to Brockville; 1000 Islands Cruise; Tour of Fulford Mansion & Tea at Cosies Tea House.

We leave the ACC at 8:30 A.M. sharp, (you must be at the ACC at 8:00 A.M. sharp to board the bus). We return at 6:00 P.M.

We will also visit Canada’s oldest Railway Tunnel which was built in 1850 and runs 1 quarter of a mile under the city. It was restored in 2017 and visitors can now walk through the tunnel.

After we will tour the Fulford Place mansion; an Edwardian mansion containing much of the original furnishings & art collected from around the world.

After we will have tea at Cosies Tea House, (Scones, jam, cream & tea) Then we depart for Montreal at 4:00 P.M.

Cost for Bus, Cruise, and High Tea:

I need to have your answer ASAP BY April 5, 2024, as I must see if we have enough interest for these trips, and I must make the reservations well in advance.

1. Wednesday May 8, 2024, Day Trip to Ottawa for the Canadian Tulip Festival. CANCELLED

We leave the ACC at 8:00 AM sharp ( You must be at the ACC at 7:30 AM Sharp to board the bus ) We return at 6:00 PM.

We will travel by Luxury Bus and arrive at Ottawa at 10:00 AM.

We will be met by our local guide who will be narrating in detail about all that we will be seeing. He will show us the Tulip Beds, as well as the major attractions, including a visit to the stables to see the musical rides. At 4:45 we drive to Buffett des Continents, for a buffet dinner. At 6:00 we depart for Montreal for a 9:00 PM arrival.

This exhibit is the first to set the works of American painter Georgia O’Keeffe in dialogue with that of British sculptor Henry Moore.This large –scale exhibition draws new parallels between the lives and art of these two 20 ^th century icons and pioneers of modern art. Through over 120 works, together with recreations of each artist’s studio, it retraces the evolution of their artistic practices and underscores the profound influence the natural world had on their work.

Change of Location for Holiday Luncheon

CHANGE OF LOCATION FOR HOLIDAY LUNCHEON. It will be held at the Greenspan Auditorium 5801 Cavendish Blvd. ( Downstairs from City Hall )

November 29, 2023 Holiday Luncheon & Holiday Entertainment.

1:30 PM Doors open at 12:45.

A Festive Holiday Lunch. Entertainment by Nick Burgess (keyboard ) & Eva Petris ( Singer)

Eva was born and raised in Montreal, Eva has performed on stages all across Canada.

Most notably, Eva was part of the original North American cast of Mythic: An Immortal Rock Musical at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts.

Other select credits include: Nerva in Fatal Charade (Elkabong Theatre); Rodgers & Hammerstein’s A Grand Night for Singing and Mrs. Phelps in Matilda (North Stage, TO); two seasons as Philippa Gordon in Anne & Gilbert: The Musical (The Guild/PEI); the title role in Captain Aurora: A Superhero Musical (Mtl Fringe & Wildside); Dora Wasserman's Yiddish Theatre's On Second Avenue (Segal Centre); Divine Intervention (Atlantic Fringe); Val in A Chorus Line: In Concert; Godspell (Beautiful City Theatre).

The festive lunch will be scoops of Egg Salad, Tuna, Fake Crab, Garden Green salad & Potato salad. Dinner rolls, fruit cocktail and donut holes for dessert. Also non alcoholic wines. Tea & coffee.

MacDonalds Cote St. Luc will be bringing fresh brewed coffee.

A Note From Dida Berku Regarding Ashkelon and a Free Concert

Dear Members of the CSL Women’s Club,

It was a great pleasure for me to join your holiday lunch last week. It is very uplifting to see you all enjoying the holiday spirit and let me assure you that the City is very grateful to be able to support your activities. At this time of year, as we partake in our Chanukah and Christmas celebrations, many residents in our twin City of Ashkelon are not so lucky. Ashkelon sits just 12 km from Gaza and is in the direct line of fire of Hamas rockets. Since October 7, 2023, Ashkelon has been hit by hundreds of rockets, striking a hospital and other infrastructure. Schools are closed and classes are offered virtually. Just yesterday a rocket strike hit a residential building, causing significant damage and injuries.

In support of the children who have had to be evacuated and can no longer attend school, the City of Côte Saint-Luc has set up a fund to allow them to continue their education virtually. To provide computers to children who need them, Federation CJA has created the IEF – Ashkelon Fund. As the sister city of Ashkelon, the City of Côte Saint-Luc encourages the public to donate to this fund. As well, the City of Cote Saint Luc is hosting a concert of light classical music provided by the ensemble Musica Camerata. The Hope and Harmony concert, in support of the children of Ashkelon, is taking place at 2 p.m. Sunday Dec. 10 at the Harold Greenspon Auditorium, located at the Bernard Lang Civic Centre. The Concert is free, however there is suggested donation of $18 to the Ashkelon fund. All donors will receive a full tax receipt from Federation.

SPRING DAY TRIPS

1. The Following is the Day trip to Ottawa. THE TRIP IS CANCELLED

If you would like to go on this trip, you can bring a non-member (They pay the non-member price). The Deadline is April 23, 2025. Your reservation must be accompanied with the payment. NO POST DATED CHEQUES.

PLEASE NOTE THIS TRIP IS FOR AUTONOMOUS PEOPLE AS THERE WILL BE A LOT OF WALKING INVOLVED.

Wednesday May 14, 2025 - Day Trip to Ottawa for the Canadian Tulip Festival.

We leave the ACC at 7:15 AM sharp (you have to be at the ACC at 6:45 AM sharp to board the bus).

We return at Approximately 6:00 PM. We will travel by Luxury Bus. Arrival at Ottawa at 9:30 AM.

If you have a confirmed reservation, please be at the Aquatic Center for 8:45 AM. We should be returning around 5:30 PM.

2. Wednesday May 21, 2025 Annual Day Trip to Hudson Village with Brunch and a Play

We leave the ACC at 9:30 AM sharp (You have to be at the ACC at 9:00 AM sharp to board the bus ). We return at approximately 6:00 PM. We will travel by Luxury Bus.
